12 months Pre Sea Training course followed by 18 months of Structured Shipboard Training as TNOC (Deck Cadet).
- The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year residential pre-sea programme approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and affiliated with the Indian Maritime University (IMU). It prepares aspiring cadets for a rewarding career as Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy.
- The programme combines classroom learning, simulator training, practical workshops, and onboard shipboard familiarization to build strong navigational and seamanship skills.
- Upon successful completion of the DNS programme, cadets proceed for 18 months of onboard sea training with their sponsoring shipping company before appearing for the Second Mate Examination conducted by DG Shipping.

Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
- Candidate must have successfully completed 10+2 (Science stream).
- Must have secured a minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (PCM).
- Must have scored a minimum 50% marks in English (in 10th or 12th).
- Overall aggregate should be a minimum 60%.
- Candidates appearing for 12th can also apply (for upcoming batches).
IMU-CET Requirement
- It is mandatory to appear and qualify in the IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test).
- Without an IMU-CET qualification, DNS sponsorship is not valid.
Age Criteria
- Minimum Age: 17 years.
- Maximum Age: 25 years.
- Note: For Scheduled Castes (SC) & Scheduled Tribe (ST) Candidates, maximum age relaxation is five (5) years.
Medical Requirements
- Candidate must be medically fit as per DG Shipping guidelines.
- Eyesight: 6/6 vision required (No Color Blindness).
- Must be certified by a DG Shipping approved doctor.
Instructions for DNS Sponsorship
- Candidates must meet all academic, age, and medical eligibility criteria before applying; non-compliant applications may be rejected at any stage.
- Qualifying the IMU-CET is mandatory for DNS admission and sponsorship.
- Fill out the application form with accurate details; incorrect or incomplete information may lead to disqualification.
- Use a valid email ID and mobile number for all communication regarding tests, interviews, and selection updates.
- A valid Indian passport is compulsory before the commencement of training.
- The selection process may include an online test, personal interview, and psychometric assessment conducted by the sponsoring company.
- Candidates must bear all costs related to application, entrance exams, medical tests, and travel expenses.
- Shortlisted candidates must attend interviews with original documents, including 10th & 12th mark sheets, IMU-CET score, passport, and certificates.
- Medical fitness must comply with Directorate General of Shipping standards, including 6/6 vision and no color blindness.
- Selected candidates will receive the sponsorship & Admission letter on receipt of the seat booking fees.
- Total course fees cost is 8.5 lakhs excluding the IMU University Fees.
- After training, candidates must enroll in the Structured Shipboard Training Programme (SSTP) before onboard joining.
- Maintain discipline and follow institute policies; misconduct may result in cancellation of sponsorship & withdrawal of admission
- The Institute doesn’t appoint any agents – apply directly.
- Final selection is at the sole discretion of the Selection committee based upon your performance.

Admission Process
Apply online through the official website by filling in accurate personal, academic, and contact details.
Eligible candidates receive an email with a link to appear for an online examination, which can be taken from any location with a stable internet connection.
Candidates who clear the online test are invited via email for a personal interview at a company-decided venue and schedule.
Shortlisted candidates from the interview must undergo a medical examination conducted by company-approved doctors.
Final selection is communicated through email based on academic performance, test scores, interview results, and medical fitness.
Selected candidates are required to pay the seat booking amount and submit the necessary documents to confirm their admission.
Upon confirmation, candidates receive the official sponsorship letter from the company and admission letter.
Online Entrance Test
The online entrance test conducted by Training Ship Varren is a 2-hour examination designed to assess a candidate’s overall aptitude, academic knowledge, and suitability for a career in the Merchant Navy.
Candidates will receive the login credentials and detailed instructions via email before the examination.
The cut-off marks for qualification will also be communicated through email at the time of the test. All questions in the examination are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
The test evaluates candidates across the following key areas:
English
Tests your vocabulary, reading skills and sentence-building ability.
Reasoning Ability
Logical thinking, pattern recognition and problem-solving skills.
Personality Test (AMPD)
Measures key personality traits important for a maritime career.
Maths
Basic arithmetic including ratios, interest, time & work and profit & loss.
General Knowledge
Questions from current affairs, history, geography and economics.
Physics
Important topics like motion, laws of physics, heat and electricity.
Chemistry
Basic understanding of Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry concepts.
This test plays a crucial role in shortlisting candidates for the next stages of the DNS Sponsorship Selection Process.
Structured Shipboard Training
The offer of admission for Pre-Sea Training and Shipboard Training by TSV shall not be considered as guarantee of employment upon completion of such training.
However, in the event of TSV offering employment after passing the Examination, the candidate shall agree to be bound to accept employment and serve on the vessel for a period of three years.
This requirement is in accordance with the Gazette Notification S.O.2132 (E) issued on 12 December 2007 by the Government of India.
Career Path
The total training period is 30 months — 12 months on shore and 18 months onboard a ship as Deck Cadet (TNOC).
After completion of training, candidates must clear the Second Mate Examination leading to the Certificate of Competency.
Stipend during the training shall be determined by the market conditions as well as the organization that the trainees join for their training period.
